Title: Text Export Issues
Post by Steve Paulson on Mar 5th, 2008, 1:35am

Version 4.2 Demo

I am working through the Demo version trying to get a high level understanding of each of the functional areas of Tinderbox and have run up against some issues with text export (note Text export seems to work fine when I select HTML export and use the text template):

1. Selecting either Export as Text from the file menu or "new Nakakoji View" from the Views window results 1st in a very slow response (10-20 seconds on a Macbook Pro, 2.4)

2.  The results appear to me to be gibberish. What follows is the beginning snippet of a really long file...even though I am working with a Note that has about 100 words (sample is delimied by <sample></sample>:

<sample>
Joy!peffpwpc√mˇˇˇˇˇˇˇˇ∞ ˇˇˇˇ
ˇˇˇˇˇˇˇˇ˚

⁄@ˇ ∫ ∆ ∑ ◊ ˛ ∑ ∏ ˘ ˇ ∑ ˘ ∫ √ ˝

+
A
Y
</sample>

Help!  What am I overlooking or likely doing wrong?

Thanks

There's an issue in Tinderbox 4.2, text export, and the built-in templates.  External templates are fine, so people who use text export with existing Tinderbox docs won't have problems.

We'll have this fixed in the next release.

Mark,

Thanks for the confirmation!

I thought I'd followed the manual directions accurately.  It is good to know I wasn't fat fingering something.

The internal text export templates are a brand-new feature, and it looks like something got tangled in the 4.2 release.  Just whip up your own export template file.  It might be something like this:

^title
^text
-----

You could get fancy, but you get the point.  Save this somewhere as a text file, set it as your default (DOCUMENT preferences, Text Export pane), and you're set.

Or use HTML export :)

Sorry about the bollix.

When I use 4.2 on existing documents, try to do a text export and then try to change templates, tinderbox uses all the CPU (of one core) and I'm required to force quit it in activity monitor.

Look out for recursive templates (e.g. ^justChildren or ^include) in text export.  And the above-mentioned issue with built-in templates is a nuisance for text export in Tinderbox 4.2 (it'll be fixed shortly).

Justin: if you don't think your problem is either of these, you probably should contact Tinderbox tech support at tinderbox@eastgate.com with all the details.
