Title: All HTML Export Templates Grayed Out
Post by Lance Braud on Jun 21st, 2008, 4:40am

When I attempt to set the default HTML export template, I cannot set it to any template I have made myself. The Finder window shows all my templates grayed out. I have downloaded other templates, tbx-2-ipod for instance, and I can select them fine. Examining the file with Get Info I see that the working templates have a "Kind:" of "SimpleText Document" while mine show "Plain Text."

I've changed the encoding to Unicode and Western, and I've saved a new file in TextEdit and MacVim.

If I copy a downloaded template into the directory where I've stored all of my templates, I can select that one template to set my default html template directory. If I then go to an html view, I can select any of my templates from the drop-down list and they work fine.

I'm using Tinderbox 4.0.1.

Thanks,
Lance

Tinderbox isn't sure your templates are actually text files, as opposed to something it shouldn't open.

The easiest solution nowadays might be to switch to using template notes.  Make a note, check Can be a template in the Create/Rename dialog, and copy (or drop) your template text into the template note.

No muss, no fuss, and no bother with external files.  We could coax your system into recognizing the files -- the issue is the old Type metadata field -- but template notes are usually the way to go.

Thanks for your quick reply Mark. I don't believe I can make a note a template in 4.01. How could I set the old Type metadata field to something Tinderbox recognizes?

You are correct re internal templates - that needs v4.1.x+. Looking at TB template files on my system is seems TB wants the files to be of Mac OS file Type 'TEXT' - setting a '.txt' file extension isn't enough.

A problem you face setting a file's Type string is I don't think the Mac OS has an included/free tool that lets you see or set such data.  The OS Get Info doesn't show Mac Creator and Type info.
