Title: Visually display character points of view
Post by Felix Dencker on Mar 11th, 2010, 9:40am

I translated a blog entry I wrote a couple of weeks ago on how to use Tinderbox to visually display the points of view of important characters in a novel.

This is really basic stuff in terms of Tinderbox usage (if that's the right term), but the idea may be useful.

Does anyone have an idea how to incorporate changes that occur over the course of a story?

Only thing I can think of would be the colors again, and use them to mark certain acts or sequences.

How about varying opacity to indicate characteristics that change during the course of the story?

Or, use a badge to indicate characteristics that emerge after a key event (e.g. "After the confrontation between Helga and Heine, all the Gustfasons are frightened and all the Griegs (except Johanne) are angry")

Another possibility might be to use space: the more leftward (say) a characteristic is in the map, the later it is shown in the plot. So (for example) Sylvester's traumatic childhood ocurred many years ago, but it is only disclosed to the reader in the final act.

Just a quick pointer: I moved my blog, so the above adress doesn't work anymore.

Here's the new one:

(German version: http://www.felixdencker.de/post/918260410/charakter-perspektiven-visuell-darstellen-mit-tinderbox)

@Mark:
I just thought of another way. Just name the connection with the number of the chapter or name of the key event, when this change occured.

Edit: I may have to update my blog article :)
