Title: HTML Template/Output without programming skills?
Post by luix on Aug 8th, 2014, 9:52am

I tried to »export to HTML« but only received »Unable to find this template«.
Than I looked around in this forum and learned that I have to be a programmer to get something running.

I simply want a way to see my notes on devices without Tinderbox.
Aren't there any basic templates?
Thank you.

There's no need for any programming at all.

When you export, Tinderbox needs to know what aspects of each note you want to export, and how these should be exported.  You explain this to Tinderbox through a TEMPLATE note -- a note which shows what the exported file should look like.  In the template, placeholders like
Code:
^title^
and
Code:
^text^
show where to place the title and text of the note, respectively.

When Tinderbox says it was  »Unable to find this template«, it's reporting that you asked to export a note using a template that doesn't exist.

For basic HTML templates, see FILE>BUILT IN TEMPLATES>HTML

As writing your own template and connecting it up may seem like coding, I've made a little v6 document (download a zip) with simple templates added. Read the readme note - which you can them delete or move elsewhere if you want.

As the 'built-in' HTML export uses a cascade, i.e. a note exports itself and its descendants, and this is unlikely to be a new user's basic requirement, I've modified that template. The document is set up now such the the default template just exports one file per note.

If you want the cascading version of the template (many files' data in one HTML page), use the HTML Inspector to choose that template. Note that the Inspector only changes the selection for the current note. A place in Document settings to assign a document-wide default doesn't yet exist but is a requested feature.

Give the file a go, or copy its ideas in your own documents. Ask if you get stuck.

As a result of this thread, I've added a Clarify walkthrough of setting up for export.
