Title: Exporting as text or attribute browser not working
Post by Barbara Snyder on Apr 24th, 2015, 3:09pm

6.20

I have an agent that pulls together a subset of notes that meet certain criteria. When I select all the child notes (aliases, to be exact) and choose Export to text, the resulting txt or rtf file is empty.

I also have an attribute browser view with a query that collects the same notes with time elapsed subtotaled by date. I tried to use Export as Attribute Browser but it is greyed out.

Any ideas?

Thanks -- Barbara

With the agent exporting to RTF, were you exporting just the 'selected note' or the 'entire document'. If the former, only the agent is exported, not its children (i.e the child aliases) unless they too are selected.

Conceptually RTF export differs from HTML. In the former, notes export their $Text and don't use export codes/templates (or such is my understanding).

I selected all the notes underneath the agent before exporting, as I explained, and chose Export as Text.  But the exported docs (RTF or TXT) are empty.

However, while writing this, the Export option was greyed out completely. So I quit and restarted tbx, and tried exporting a single note. That worked. But selecting multiple notes (aliases) still isn't working.

So then I tried exporting multiple real notes, not aliases, and that worked.

So I hope the answer isn't "You can't export the contents of an agent" or "you can't export aliases."  :-X

If the export as attribute browser worked, that would help too. But that's always greyed out, even when I'm in the AB window.

Thanks -- Barbara

Export menu being greyed out seems to be an intermittent issue. Normally toggling the View pane selection results i the menu being re-enabled.

I'm not sure on at the agent alias side as I don't know the design intent.

Thanks. I can't get the export as attribute browser to be active at all, no matter where I am in the window. Hopefully Mark B. will have some time to respond to these questions at some point.

Can't replicate that here.  As said, occasionally, the Export options are greyed. I think I expects - or prefers - focus to be in the View (left) pane and not the Text (right) pane but I'm not sure of the cause.

If re-starting the app doesn't cure your problem, contact (info@eastgate.com) support as it may be an issue with you particular setup, given that it's not reproducible. Hope you manage to sort this out soon.

File ▸ Export ▸ As Attribute Browser will be enabled when (a) the current view tab is an attribute browser, and (b) the view tab has the keyboard focus.

Here's the sequence of events I finally discovered:

If I open a new AB view and immediately choose File Export, the AB option is available. But as soon as I select a note, the option is no longer available and there is no way to make it available again.

I clicked on the tab title, which seemed to deselect all notes, but the export option never returns unless I open a new AB window.

Here, if a AB view is the front (active) tab, as long as the cursor focus is in the (left) View pane, Export as AB is always accessible. If focus is placed anywhere in the right pane - title, KAs or $Text access to the export is greyed out.

Clicking on an AB tab in on act selects the tab, selects the first listed item in the view (left) pane, loads that note's info and sets focus in the $Text area. The last will of course grey out export as focus is in the wrong pane. Click back into the the left pane - don't worry if something is selected - and AB export should be available.

I tried that - several times. No matter what I do, AB export never becomes available again. Here are some screenshots:

AB available immediately after opening AB window, even if a note is selected:

AB not available after doing any action (e.g. selecting a note):

Does it occur in every TBX file?

Yes, even a brand new one. It took me forever to figure out what was going on. I take it you aren't having the same problem?

No. If you're not using the current public release v6.2.1(b141) I'd update and try again. Otherwise, I guess you need to contact support.

I don't remember receiving any notice of a newer version than the 6.2.0 b136 that I am using. I will definitely download the newest version!

I think v6.2.1 just snuck out quietly. Ah - aTbRef6 tells us it was on the 25 April. I don't recall any Attribute Browser specific issue but it's worth staying on the latest build at this point because lots or fit-n-finish work is happening alongside new things arriving.

Still having problem. I made a video showing the exact steps I am taking and results I am seeing, which I will send to support.

I am now using 6.30 and still have the issue of not being able to export AB except immediately after I issue the View AB command. Clicking on the tab name, which used to work, no longer works.

No one else is seeing this?

Thanks -- Barbara

If the issue is the Export menu AB option is greyed out, try toggling to a different tab, or moving the cursor from the text pane into the View (left) pane.

Interesting. Toggling to text pane in AB gives me all export options EXCEPT AB. Toggling to another tab and back, or to the left pane, has no effect. The only thing that works is View AB (even if that is already the view) and then immediately Export as AB.

6.3 b152

Odd. I believe the design intent here  is that you explicitly select focus on the view pane for exporting views. I'm not sure what is happening here.
