Straight links by default
Jul 15th, 2011, 6:52am
I think this got removed in a recent update. In the past you could select an option to have 'straight links' by default rather than the curvy ones. Now it's curvy by default and you have to change them all manually as per link type. Could we have the 'straight links by default' option back?

For the record, straight/curved links was a Maps app/doc preference setting** pre-v5.0 and applied globally to all links. As from v5 each link type got its own line style controls plus the Maps prefs tab got fully so the pref went away. Thus the app/doc level pref can't be set via the UI, and looking at the XML there is no attribute that the user could set via a config.xml file. The dotted/dashed/linear/bold settings are now stored as a number hash: dotted = 8, dashed = 16, linear = 64, bold = 128. So a doted & linear line has a stored style attribute value of 72 (8 +64). This is likely also to be a reason the old preference was removed.

Short of a curved/linear Maps pref setting returning, your best workaround is to make a new file, set all the link types to 'linear' via the link types controls, and save it as a favourite (technique akin to my 'starter' file). Then when making a new file, don't use File -> New, but rather File -> Open Recent and select your pre-saved master from the bottom section of the fly-out menu.

** FWIW, 'curved' actually was the default since at least v2.3.4 - as far back as aTbRef's records go.
