Broken File association in demos
Sep 06th, 2011, 8:14am

The CD "Tinderbox TutorialSeries Vol 1 " has a file named "Demo-Index.tbx".  The first note of this file indicates that the other notes in the file are associated with files on the disc and may be opened by using the button on the sidebar.  Unfortunately the file path stored in the file attribute is directed to the publishers computer i.e. /users/mwra/Dropbox/TB_Demos/Demo_Files/Afghan_Map_Demo and not my computer.

I have two questions: 1) Is it possible to repair the links using an agent or some other means and 2) Is there a method of adding a file link that will survive moving between computers?

best wishes

Simon

I made the original file so can perhaps answer. The path is indeed currently for my system. My instructions were that when the CD master was created (i.e. the volume name was known) the CD creator should reset the path to use a 'local' (to CD) path. However, it seems there was a misstep during production. A shame as the tick was meant to be a bonus (working!) demo, but no matter it's not hard to fix. So much for history, on to a fix...

Can you fix your copy?  Yes, though you'll need to do so using a copy of the file dragged to your h/d so the file is read/write. Then following the instructions in the Readme note to update the necessary date ($MySring in agent "TBX Location"). You can either leave the demos on CD and target the CD volume.
[some while later]
Oh dear, methinks using a colon in the CD volume name (Tinderbox Tutorial Series: Vol 1) isn't compatible with TB's $File. So to use the index as intended, drag the Demo_Files folder - c.21MB - to your hard-drive and set the path to that location.

#2. You could try:
  • use a ~ based path and point to a location in the user's files (assumes the files are on each Mac's h/d, and in the same location in the user's files).
  • put the demo bank in your own dropbox and point to it there (~/Dropbox/TB_Demos).
  • put the demo bank in a public location on your LAN an link to that.
  • Hopefully subsequent CDs will fix the volume name and configure the TBX as originally planned, then you can just stick in the CD (or mount the DMG)

Oooops I'm guilty of not reading the Readme - I read the first couple of lines and then posted - sorry.

I don't have the CD as my files came as a download so the CD may be o.k. - I do't know.

I have followed the instructions to reset the paths and they now look good in the notes.  However, the file is not available from the button which is labeled as "(drop files or folders) and displays the following items on its menu: ticked Open greyed out; Clear File greyed out; and an active Browse.

An example of the value set in  $File is : /Users/skids/Documents/Tinderbox\ Files/Tinderbox\ Documentation/Tinderbox\ Tutorial\ Series\ Vol\ 1/TB\ Demos/Demo_Files /Demo_Files/Concatentate-Text3.tbx

I assume that the back slashes are "escaping" the space characters as the above came from Terminal.

It seems that TBX is not recognising that a link to a file has been set despite there being a value set - Any thoughts?

Sorted! I've found a simpler way to do this. I too am working with the DMG but I assume the CD has the same volume name. My revised TBX should - I believe - work with either source. Or, using the instructions in the TBX reset the path to work with the demo bank moved onto your own hard-drive.

Get a ZIP of the corrected TBX: Tutorial001-Demo-Index.zip

~~~~~~~~
Please note:
  • The new TBX also fixes a couple of wrong prototype assignments.
  • You may find a few extra notes for files not in your set. The demo bank is ongoing and may have I added a (very) few things since the CD went to press - ignore the extra items.
