basic question about old tbx files in tbx 6
May 29th, 2014, 10:08pm

Given the magnitude of the update, what happens when I try and open older tbx files in tbx 6 (version 5.12, say)?

It's been my experience that older Tinderbox files simply open in Tinderbox 6 and work without issue. That said, I always make a backup Smiley

My experience has been the same:

- They've all worked without trouble; but

- I've always made backups before trying.

When a familiar app rolls a major version that has significant changes, as well as back-ups I often make a deliberate sacrificial copy. In other words, I take my valuable file (say, years of research) and make a copy with a completely different name. This is to remind me this is a throw-away 'play' file.  I then open this file and have a tinker. see what's different, find out how I may need to adjust my work if at all. Then push further and just play about 'breaking' stuff with no penalty. As I know the content it's easier to spot unexpected events/errors. I can then close and put that file in the trash before opening a fresh, backed up, copy of my 'real' file with some more confidence as to how it will look behave.

I think this advice is most pertinent to files where you've added automation of some kind - i.e. under-the-hood stuff where there's greater scope for unexpected results to multiply fast.

That said I've encountered no major data missteps with TB6 (aside from normal test-build crashes/hangs) and I've used it since pre beta. Indeed, I've been really impressed with how even in test versions that any hiccups didn't damage my files - with the result I was soon using files that I'd normally not use with a beta.

I have a large file that I originally created in Twig.  I was able to open it in Tinderbox 5 with the .twig extension but I can't open it in Tinderbox 6.  Tinderbox 5 won't let me save the file with the .tbx extension.  How can I import this file/map into Tinderbox 6?

Make a copy of the file; give the copy the .tbx extension; drag it onto the TinderboxSix dock icon. That should do it!
