Unexpected quit changing a note's prototype
Nov 04th, 2014, 6:00am

I'm intermittently getting an unexpected quit out of Tinderbox Six when trying to change a note's prototype via the inspector. Any clues to avoid would be welcome please. The error message:

Hi, thanks for stopping by. Please email those direct to support for earlier attention. This is a user-to-user forum (i.e. not formal text support) so not set up triage things like crash logs.

As a heavy TB user, I can say this isn't an issue I've seen before - or heard reported. But note I'm not using Yosemite, as you appear to be. So it may be an issue with OS 10.10 only.

Don't forget to email support, and hope you get to the bottom of things OK. Just realised you've got that separate issue with key attributes - you might want to mention that in your email in case the two are connected.

Jason, no censure intended. Just helping manage expectations. I figure helping you get fixed more quickly is what matters.  Smiley

Please send the crash log and the document with which you're having problems to info@eastgate.com

Just to add my 2 cents (I intend to email info@eastgate.com once I know they have responded to previous emails from me).

Tbx 6.1.1 in Yosemite crashes for me 2-3 times per hour (working in very small documents). I have not noticed any pattern yet.

Enlightened self-interest suggests it is worth forwarding crash logs to info@eastgate.com, if possible with a short contextual description of evens prior to the crash.

I'm not on Yosemite but other testers are and they use prototypes a lot so if this were a general problem I'd expect it to be a known issue if as-yet unfixed. This implies the trigger conditions may be particular to your workflow. That doesn't mean you're doing something wrong, just things others aren't (and the differences only need to be quite minor).

From other posts you've made, I'd hazard a guess that one possible cause is simply bad agent query syntax. I've had occasional instances where an inadvertent error with the query caused a crash - but not so instant as to make clear the immediate cause. Correcting the issue stopped further such crashes. In this case the crash logs should be useful for support in triaging a solution.

I've used TB6 very heavily daily for 3 months on a research project (albeit mainly on OS 10.8) in both publics and beta releases and would stress the app is actually very stable. However, if the same crash condition is triggered repeatedly (albeit unknowingly), the ensuing crashes will result giving a false indication as to overall stability when in fact there is one consistent cause.

Mark,

You've probably again hit the nail on the head, at least in my case. I'm totally new to Tbx but am trying to do some (at least for me) complex actions/rules which usually don't work the first few times.

In my book, that makes it unstable and shouldn't be a public release (at least for Yosemite).

As Mark A and others have noted, 6.1.1 does not really seem to have an inherent stability problem with Yosemite. I've used it pretty much round the clock with Yosemite (now 10.10.1) with infrequent (every few days) crashes, fwiw.
