Font bolding in Note Title
Jan 01st, 2016, 12:42pm

I notice that, though I have Georgia 14pt as my preferred text font in Text and Maps, when in Outline View, if I choose to Bold a Note Title, it converts to Helvetica Neue Bold. Not so with the Note's Text Pane, where my choice is honored.

Bolding works for me - testing on v6.4.0.  I make a new TBX, use Doc setting to set default font to Georgia 14pt for both text and maps. I then added a new note to the map. To bold the text, I opened the Text Inspector, Title sub-tab, and ticked the 'bold' box (which sets $NameBold). In both map and outline view, this bolds the view pane title. In the text pane, the title is not bolded until the pane is refreshed (de-/re-select the note).

How are you setting the bolding on the title?

Cmd-B or use the drop down Format menu.

For me (in v6.4.0) neither of those methods have any effect on the rendering of $Name in either map or outline view. Titles (in whatever view) allow these customisations only:
  • Colour - $NameColor.
  • Font - $NameFont.
  • Bolding - $NameBold.

Interesting. I wonder why a Note Name changes to Helvetica Neue Bold for me when I use one of those other 2 methods. In any even, I've changed to using a Badge for the purpose for which I was using Bold.

Why not use $NameBold if you want bolded titles?

Yep. That's what I'll use when I want Bold Names. Just faster to add a Badge.

Also, though Cmd-B bolds the Name without honoring the underlying font, Cmd-I italicizes the Name while honoring the underlying font.

I seem to remember not being able to italicize the Name at all in prior versions because that attribute was reserved for Aliases.

In v6.4.0 on OS 10.11.2, if i edit the $name of a notew in either the view or text pane, seleect the $Name text and use Cmd+I, it has no effect.

I repeat: if you want the $Name to be shown in bold use $NameBold$NameFont - do not use text formatting controls.

If the text formatting controls do have some effect on your Mac then I suspect that is accidental. You are best off using the $Name formatting options listed above, as controlled via the attributes specified.

Got it. I'll stay away from text formatting controls for Names.

In outline view, if a note is selected, ⌘-B will set $NameBold and ⌘-I will select an italic face.

An error in Tinderbox 6.4.0 sometimes makes emboldened fonts in outlines use the fallback font, which will also be used if the font has no bold variant.

Over here, if I rely solely on Cmd-B and Cmd-I, the Name font can never be  both Bold and Italics, even if the font supports that.

However, I can set it to Italics with Cmd-I and then embolden it with Inspector. Then I have Bold Italics.

It’s generally preferable to reserve italics for aliases.  (You can also underling aliases, but this is really intended for languages with non-Roman character sets where “italic” isn’t a concept.)

Yes. I am reserving Italics for aliases so I don't confused, and am now using Badges to accent certain Names in Outline View.
