Retain Spatial Window Paradigm

I know the whole Mac world is going to single window user interfaces, some with tabs. And I can see the attraction for small MacBooks and the presumed iPad version.

But I'with John Siracusa (if he still believes this) that the spatial Finder is superior to what we have now. TBx is the only application I use heavily that allows me to have windows spatially organized. I use this in concert with the various views and map topologies.

So the request is, please don't toss the multi-window mode.

Smart Duplicate Names (and a mystery)

Try this: Duplicate a note. The duplicate gets assigned the original name of the note with "copy" appended. Now make a duplicate of the duplicate. You would think that it simply gets another "copy" appended on the end, but this is not the case. A "1" is appended. Now make a duplicate of this last duplicate. The "1" is replaced by "2", so now the name of the last duplicate is "some note name copy 2". You can continue to make duplicates and the number will be incremented. Now make a brand new note and give it the name "Another Note copy". Make a duplicate of it. You will see that a "1" is appended to the name of the duplicate. It appears the word "copy" as the last word in the name of the note seems to trigger this behavior. (If you really want to see some odd behavior make a note with the name "note copy a" and make a duplicate of this note, but that looks like an unintended feature. A bug perhaps. Anyone know the significance of 3196639 ?)

I really do not want to have a series of notes with the word "copy" in them, but I might want to have a series of notes with incremented numbers in their names. (I could use "Person 1" and "Person 2" before I know what their names are, for example.)

Suggestion: If you choose to duplicate a note and the note name ends with a number (e.g. "Factor 1"), instead of appending "copy" to the end of the name at the time of making the duplicate, increment the number in the name by 1 (e.g. "Factor 2").

Concerning alignment in Map View

OK, I was just avoiding trying to give the impression I have a strong feeling on this. I don't, though just for the very simple reason I use Map view far less than Outline view.

As regards the PDF, the points you raise are correct in their description and are inelegancies that are by-product of ongoing improvements over the life of v5. As v5 is feature complete (i.e. likely no new features), any changes will take place in v6, whose UI is being updated in ways I don't yet know.

My thoughts on select on map drill-down are here.

As regards Map Icons, I think it looks better/more consistent if all label content ($Name/$Subtitle/$Text/$TableExpression) were drawn in from the top of the icon and not middle-aligned vertically.

As regards the titlebar overlapping the map, I suspect the current behaviour it a legacy of old design for - as you've pointed out - it doesn't make sense if re-setting title height doesn't 'scroll' the viewport map. BUT, 'just' scrolling the map may - and probably - does (in v5) involve more under-the-hood computing than we might imagine. There's no point in discussing v5 that won't change. Meanwhile, perhaps v6 design may allow for this, but as said already, how can I comment on a design I've not seen?

Bottom line, I don't have anything pertinent to contribute at this time, other than suggest those who desire improvements send their ideas to Eastgate to help inform the v6 design process.

Tinderbox for presentation. A few suggestions

I've no strong views either way. I can see one edge case problem re auto-selection on map drill-down. In doing the same in Outline or Chart view, the first child by $OutlineOrder is automatically selected. Drilling down in a map the map view within the parent viewport is presented at the centre of the window. If the map selected the first child(by outline) child and scrolled to it that is - I suspect - not the user's likely idea.

Perhaps if the note whose {$Xpos,$Ypos} were closest to the parent's $MapScrollX,$MapScrollY} - or lower right quadrant from that, then a more 'logical select might occur. Just an idea!

Though, with nesting, don't want to break:

Code:
click menu item myStampName of menu "Stamps" of menu bar item "Stamps" of menu bar 1

Without a Tinderbox suite in the AppleScript Dictionary this is a convenient way "in" to Tinderbox action code from the outside (can trigger a stamp with a keyboard shortcut assigned just like any other menu item and can pass selected text into the OS clipboard and directly into an attribute, for example).

Love stamps too. Can "roll your own" custom menu... and minimize agents running mysteriously in the background.

In the meantime add this stamp:

Name: DisplayExpression disabled
Code: if($DisplayExpressionDisabled){$DisplayExpressionDisabled=;}else{$DisplayExpressionDisabled=true;};

To toggle the existing $DisplayExpressionDisabled state simply use the stamp.

If you're a keyboard-only type and use a utility like KeyboardMaestro you can give the stamp an shortcut making it quicker to apply than opening Rename and clicking a tick-box then clicking OK.
