Give permission
Allow yourself to think creatively and bend rules. Ask what would happen. Imagine a room of possibility in your mind where anything could happen. Use this as a testing chamber for ideas that aren't "safe" in the real world.

Look at what you have
What is out there? How can it be adapted to fit your needs* (e.g., using portable water pumps designed and manufactured for military use in the Vietnam era for a water supply in an Indian community).

Look at new technologies
Keep abreast of new technologies and adapt them (e.g., using an online internet or video conference rather than travelling to distant communities).

Think backward
Envision the problem is solved. Walk around the solution and describe it to others.

Break the problem into small pieces
Brainstorm options for each component

Make analogies
What does the problem remind you of?

Go away
Change your mental environment--talk it out on a walk or put it in the back of your mind while you sleep.

Keep an open mind
Don't be afraid to play and try things differently
